Population Viability Assessment
ELUTIS has conducted population viability and critical habitat analyses for numerous species at risk in Canada. We mastered the automation of extensive sensitivity analyses by combining GRIP and RAMAS GIS in support of identifying the relative importance of model parameters or, in other words to figure out what really matters with respect to the viability of an endangered species.
Habitat Suitability Modelling
The habitat of any species on the ground is comprised of a unique set of characteristics, which are necessary to complete all life-cycles of its organisms. With the help of resource selection functions or habitat suitability models and occurrence and absence data habitat can be identified, delineated and mapped for conservation measures. ELUTIS has used GIS software and implemented custom algorithms based on moving window analysis in support of delineating suitable and critical habitat for various species.
Finding an optimal solution for any kind of complex problem is not easy, in particular in landscape ecology where many spatial and temporal factors contribute to the potential outcome of a desired state. Such problems defy mathematical approaches and can only be tackled with heuristic optimisation methods. ELUTIS has used genetic algorithms and simulated annealing methods in support of finding optimal landscape configurations in support of selected species, but also under consideration of socio-economic constraints. We have great interest in developing these ideas further, which can revolutionize the way we approach conservation ecology.
ELUTIS’ staff has a strong background in landscape ecology – a scientific discipline dedicated to understand how spatial patterns of vegetation or soil characteristics affect ecological processes in space and time. Our main focus has been how animal movements, such as dispersal, migration or foraging depend on the amount and configuration of habitat and how this complex interplay affects population viability and biodiversity. Most of our research has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Big Data Management
ELUTIS has processed, stored and visualized BIG data primarily in the context of search and web analytics. We have 10+ years experience analysing log data from search applications serving millions of search requests per day. We learned many lessons using primarily conventional SQL based data storage systems combined with modern, JS based rendering technologies. Knowing what works does not prevent us from exploring new frontiers, such as Graph and NoSQL databases.
